Nukeproof launch prototype dirt jump frame

Less than a month after the release of our Rook slopestyle bike we’re excited to bring you news of our prototype dirt jump frame.

An ongoing development project with newly signed Nukeproof rider Jack Fogelquist, the frame uses custom triple-butted steel tubing with a 44mm headtube, gold anodised alloy chain tension adjusters, an integrated gold alloy seat clamp and removable cable guides.

The frame, available in regular and long, is designed around a 100mm travel fork and uses geometry based on Jack’s personal setup. Priced at around the $600.00 mark we’ll be unveiling the full production model at this year’s Eurobike show.

We are slowly becoming experts on the best bicycles to convert to electric power and we’ve opted to set up for a special sale the APOLLO SHADOW (full specs here). It’s a really good Australian bicycle that came out for a while with a Nexus 7-speed internal hub gear. It really keeps the bicycle very simple with no derailleur and is extremely robust. The conversion kit went together great, we tried both with the rack battey and the Panasonic tube battery and the tube was obviously the best in terms of handling and light weight. We have just a few in stock . Usually, this electric bicycle would retail for $1870 but it will be on special for a couple of months for $1450. The only remaining sizes available from APOLLO with the internal gear have a large frame size, it suits riders from about 170cm to 188cm. The range with light pedalling will be about 30-40km and it’s speed is around 28km/h.

Please come into our Cottesloe Cycles store if you’d like to take one for a test ride. We’re sure you’ll be pretty impressed.

Fresh from its debut at last week’s Sea Otter Classic, we’re pleased to bring you more information on the revolutionary prototype Rook slopestyle frame, a development project between Nukeproof and the company’s newly signed slopestyle rider Jack Fogelquist.

The Rook features an integrated hydraulic gyro head tube which allows for a low stack height of just 10mm – including headset cup – which is not possible on conventional frames. This innovative new head tube feature is set to be a game changer for this type of bike, and the platform will be utilised by Fogelquist throughout the remainder of the 2012 season.

Other features of the Rook include a low, mildly progressive leverage rate designed to give a stiff platform for dirt jumping or slopestyle when used with 150+ PSI. Additionally, due to the low leverage rate, the feel of the ride is highly tunable by altering the compression damping of the shock. Switching the shock to its minimum compression position and running below 150PSI provides a supple, active suspension feel for freeride or trail use.

The geometry of the Rook is optimised for a 110mm travel fork giving a 13” BB height and 69 degree head angle. Running the frame with a 160mm fork raises the BB to 13.75” and slackens the head angle to a trail taming 66 degrees. Chainstays are kept short for pumping tight bowls and manualling.

Pictured below we have the Rook in long-travel mode with a 160mm X-Fusion Vengeance 2013 fork, X-Fusion O2 RCX rear shock, Trickstuff Trixer hydraulic gyro, Truvativ Descendant cranks, SRAM X0 drivetrain, SRAM RC2 TT shifter and a Nukeproof wheelset sporting a prototype 6-speed ‘short cassette’ hub with 12mm bolt-through axle and wider flange spacing. Finishing kit is also from Nukeproof’s tried and tested component range.

Still in its prototype phase, no price details are available yet on the Rook – which will only be available as a frame-only model – and we’ll be working closely with Jack during the rest of the season to tweak and tune the frame, ready for expected release at Eurobike 2012.

A product that all of us at Carine Cycles have put a lot of time, effort and problem solving into. From the start to end this product has as much of our thought put into it as our own bikes. This was started because we were tired of using lighting systems that didn’t have parts that we thought were imperative for correct operation that were missing. A light set up built for Mountain bikers, for mountain bikers. We even have one of our road riders using one now!

We started work well before Christmas and are now seeing the start of what we hope is a great product for cyclists everywhere and every discipline!

It all started with our employees and team riders getting frustrated with light systems that just weren’t bright enough or strong enough to use for proper off road riding. Even when you pay a good chunk of money to get what is considered the best in the market. Then there was the issue of our customer base also wanting something better from a high end lighting product. This was the beginning of CCR Racing, although the name wasn’t bred until much later.

After many months of testing, reworking, re-testing and ironing out the little bugs that came up we ended with a kit including:

Head Light, 31.8 light bracket, 25.4 bracket, Screw connections , Double skinned batteries, Clear button, Rubber battery suround.

As an idea of the level our light sets went to in testing, we had the lights left on while immersed in water, to make sure it wouldn’t fail if ridden in heavy rain. Tested both on road situations and off road situations. Thought went into ventilation for the LED with O rings to seal the electrics. And screw on connections for superior sealing and connections.

Our charger has been completely SAA approved, and the ventilation finalised on the head to avoid the LED over heating.

The ventilation was a big issue for us, with the ventilation ports it opened the light set up to the elements, but without them we didn’t want to run the risk of closing the vents off and not allowing the LED to cool, which would mean issues with longevity of the light. An issue we didn’t want. After discussions with the team building the light we decided to leave the vents in and increase the security with an O-ring fitted inside the head to protect the circuits. This now means that the light not only cools by letting heat out but air rushing past the vents while riding increasing the cooling effect. Which is only a good thing.

The light set is finished with a neat, tidy unit, well ventilated, and ready to attack all your local trails, and maybe even go with you while you search for newer places to travel and ride!

This is a short story about the work, and testing that went into creating the light set, a lot more went on behind the scenes, with tests for our team, friends and employees, A lot of emails and meetings over many months, to bring cyclist a light set that is built specifically for cyclists.
